Quick answer: For most Nepali students, Malta and Cyprus are among the most affordable English-taught European options, Ireland and the Netherlands are premium choices for strong academic and financial profiles, and Greece is an emerging, lower-cost route. The right one depends on your profile, budget and goal.

For Nepali students, Europe is no longer a distant dream reserved for a lucky few. English-taught degrees, the right to work part-time, and a real gateway to global careers are all within reach — if you choose the destination that actually fits your profile, budget and goals.

Here is the honest truth we share with every student who sits across from us: no single country is “best” for everyone. Malta, Ireland, Cyprus, the Netherlands and Greece each offer something different, and choosing the wrong one can cost you time and money. This 2026 guide gives you a straight, no-hype look at five English-friendly European destinations, so you can start the conversation from the right place.

Is Malta right for you? Our flagship destination

Malta is our primary destination, and for good reason.

  • English is an official language, so you study and live in English from day one.
  • Choose MFHEA-licensed institutions and MQRIC-recognised courses (MFHEA is Malta’s further and higher education regulator). This matters for both your qualification and your residence permit.
  • Cost is moderate for Europe. Tuition at the partner colleges in our March 2026 fee table is about €5,000–€8,000 per year. Living costs depend mainly on accommodation — we build a written budget for your specific college and city.
  • Schengen access. Malta is a full Schengen member, so a Malta student residence permit lets you visit other Schengen countries for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
  • You can work while you study. Identità’s student employment page says non-EU students may work up to 20 hours per week — from the first year for full-time MQRIC-recognised higher-education courses (MQF Level 5 and above), otherwise after the first three months — once the residence permit is issued and an employment licence is obtained through Jobsplus.
  • The visa is two-stage: a Type D long-stay visa before you travel, then a residence permit application with Identità after you arrive.

Honest note: Part-time work is a genuine help with living costs, but it should never be your plan to fund the whole degree. You must show real funds.

Malta suits you if you’ve finished +2 or a bachelor’s, you’re budget-conscious, and you want an English-taught degree with Europe access and the option to earn while you study. Some students may also qualify for foundation or pathway routes — we assess this case by case, never as a guarantee. Courses below MQF Level 5 follow a different permit route.

Is Ireland right for you? Premium and career-focused

Ireland is our premium English-speaking option.

  • World-class universities, all English-taught, with degrees recognised globally (check the programme is on Ireland’s Interim List of Eligible Programmes, ILEP).
  • Strong post-study work. Under the Third Level Graduate Programme (Stamp 1G), graduates can stay to look for work without a job offer — 12 months after an honours bachelor’s (Level 8), and up to 24 months (12 months, renewable for a further 12) after a master’s or PhD (Level 9/10).
  • Work during study: 20 hours per week in term time and up to 40 hours during official holiday periods (Stamp 2).
  • Not Schengen. Ireland runs its own visa and sits outside the Schengen area, so it doesn’t come with Schengen travel — plan for that separately.

Honest note: Ireland is a premium-cost destination — tuition and Dublin living costs are high. It rewards a strong academic and financial profile.

Ireland suits you if you have a solid profile and budget, and you’re focused on long-term career and stay-back opportunities.

Is Cyprus right for you? Affordable and English-friendly

  • Many English-taught programmes at relatively affordable tuition, in a warm, English-friendly environment.
  • EU member — but not yet in Schengen. Cyprus has been working toward Schengen membership, subject to final EU approval — check the current status on the EU’s official website. Until accession is completed, a Cyprus student visa or permit is valid for Cyprus only and does not give Schengen travel.
  • Students may work up to 20 hours per week in approved sectors, with an employment contract certified by the Department of Labour — confirm the current rules for your case before you rely on it.

Cyprus suits you if you want an affordable, English-taught EU study option and Schengen travel isn’t your priority right now.

Is the Netherlands right for you? Globally ranked

  • Top-ranked, innovative universities with a wide choice of English-taught master’s programmes and a strong global reputation.
  • Full Schengen member, with the travel access that brings.

Honest note: The Netherlands is a premium destination — higher tuition, higher living costs, and a substantial proof-of-funds requirement. It best suits high-achieving, well-funded students.

The Netherlands suits you if you have a strong academic record and the budget to match, and you want a globally recognised degree.

Is Greece right for you? An emerging, affordable route

  • Lower living costs and a growing number of English-taught programmes.
  • Full Schengen member.

Honest note: Greece is an emerging destination for Nepali students, and English-taught choices are more limited than in Malta or Ireland — the specific programme and institution matter a lot here.

Greece suits you if you’re budget-focused and open to a newer route with the right programme.
