“Do I need IELTS?” is one of the first questions every student asks. The honest answer is: it depends on the country and the programme.
When you may not need IELTS
- Some universities accept a Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter confirming your previous studies were in English.
- Others accept PTE, Duolingo or an internal English test.
- A few English-taught EU programmes assess English at interview instead.
When you almost certainly do
- Many UK universities and the student visa still expect an approved test — though a number do accept an MOI letter from English-medium graduates, subject to their policy.
- Competitive or regulated programmes (health, nursing, teaching, some master’s) usually require an approved test regardless of MOI.
The point isn’t to avoid the test
