Quick answer: Choose the UK if you want a university degree — especially a one-year master’s — and can budget for higher costs. Choose Malta if you want an English-taught European qualification at a lower tuition, with frequent intakes and flexible entry. Neither is “better” for everyone; your academic record, budget and career goal decide.

What is the biggest difference between Malta and the UK?

This is the point most students miss.

  • In the UK, Nepali students usually apply to universities for bachelor’s or master’s degrees. A one-year taught master’s from a UK university is widely recognised by employers.
  • In Malta, many Nepali students study at private colleges licensed by the Malta Further & Higher Education Authority (MFHEA), on programmes rated on the Malta Qualifications Framework (MQF) — for example Level 5 diplomas, Level 6 bachelor’s degrees and Level 7 postgraduate diplomas or MBAs.

Both can be valuable. A Level 7 diploma and a master’s degree can sit at the same framework level but are different types of qualification, so choose by your goal. Ask yourself: what will my employer, or my next university, expect?

Who should choose Malta?

Malta usually suits you if:

  • Your budget is moderate and UK university fees are out of reach
  • You have a study gap and want a college that does not set a maximum gap for admission
  • You do not have IELTS and your college accepts other English evidence (see Study in Malta without IELTS)
  • You want to start soon — many colleges take students every two to four months
  • You want to study in an English-speaking EU country

Who should choose the UK?

The UK usually suits you if:

  • You want a university degree with strong international recognition
  • You have a bachelor’s degree and want a one-year master’s
  • Your academic record and English evidence meet university entry requirements
  • Your family can plan the full budget for tuition and living costs

What rule must every Malta applicant know?

Malta’s residence permit framework for students applies to full-time courses at MQF Level 5 or higher, offered by an institution licensed by MFHEA, with a qualification recognised by MQRIC. Courses below Level 5 follow a different route. Always confirm your course level before you pay — see Identità’s official FAQ.

For the UK, current rules are published on GOV.UK.

What mistakes do students make when choosing between Malta and the UK?

  • Comparing tuition only. Compare the full cost: tuition, accommodation, living costs and funds you must show.
  • Ignoring qualification type. A diploma and a university degree serve different goals.
  • Choosing a course below MQF Level 5 for Malta without understanding the different permit route.
  • Trusting “guaranteed” promises. Admission is decided by the institution; permits are decided by the authorities.

Frequently asked questions

Is Malta cheaper than the UK for Nepali students?

Usually, yes, on tuition. Our Malta partner colleges charged roughly €5,000–€8,000 per year (March 2026 fee schedules). Compare the full cost of living and required funds before deciding.

Is a Malta qualification recognised?

Malta programmes are rated on the Malta Qualifications Framework. Check that the college is licensed by MFHEA and the qualification is recognised by MQRIC, and confirm how your target employer or university views it.

Can I study in Malta or the UK without IELTS?

Sometimes. Each college or university sets its own English requirement. Many Malta colleges consider alternatives such as a medium of instruction letter; many UK universities still require an approved test.

Which is better for a student with a study gap?

Malta can be more flexible — several of our partner colleges set no maximum study gap for admission. UK universities accept gaps case by case when you can explain them.

Can Intandem help with both Malta and the UK?

Yes. We counsel for both, and we recommend the one that fits your profile — including when the honest answer is “not yet”.
